Weddings

I started shooting weddings for friends, as a gift to them. Still early in my process and without firm aspirations to do it professionally, I would bring my SLR film camera and a few lenses to their wedding, capturing moments when and where I could, as an intrepid guest rather than the paid professional they had hired to be there. I made a point to stay out of the way of their photographer, wanting to be more of a “fly on the wall” then the focus of anyone’s attention or posturing.

Later, I would process the negatives and spend hours in the darkroom making prints to assemble into an album and give it to them as my wedding gift. At the time, digital was well on it’s way to being the format of choice for most pro shooters, so I hoped they would appreciate the depth, intrigue and texture of hand-made prints, in a thoughtfully-arranged album, from shots that were almost like a documentary rather than a featured event.

They did. And eventually, I started getting asked by other friends to shoot their weddings. I would feel compelled–before accepting the daunting responsibility–to be sure that they understood my style. That they shared my vision of their big day as a happening rather than a paparazzi magazine layout or a parade of flat, set-up portraits.

These days I shoot events primarily in a digital format, though I still offer extra packages which include film, Polaroid and other alternative approaches. (I once shot a friend’s wedding entirely on plastic toy cameras!)
